Thermo King – Protecting Cargo on the Road, Rail, and at Sea.

Thermo King®, a brand of Trane Technologies, a global climate innovator, pioneered transport temperature control in 1938. As a worldwide leader, it offers refrigeration systems for vans, trucks, trailers, railway cargo carriages, air containers, sea-going and intermodal containers and passenger transport HVAC for rail, tram, metro and buses.

Thermo King’s vision for the industry is to ensure the safety of transported foods, perishables and life-saving medicines, with advanced temperature control technologies that address key challenges in the cold chain and intermodal transportation sectors. Focused on protecting cargo, enhancing sustainability, and reducing food loss and food waste, Thermo King’s solutions meet the evolving needs of the global cold chain.

Cold Chain Integrity to Minimise Food Loss

Cold chain food loss (from harvest till retail) and waste (from retail food service and home) are significant contributors to global GHG emissions, making 'end-to-end' cold chain integrity— from harvest or processing, through road, rail, sea, distribution warehouses and retailers, to the to the kitchen table—critical in minimising this issue.

Thermo King minimises transportation risks to the cold chain by ensuring consistent temperature control and safety measures throughout the entire transportation process.

Thermo King's high-performance marine refrigeration units like the Magnum Plus and Container Fresh and Frozen (CFF) reefers are designed to operate reliably, including in intermodal transitions, providing precise temperature control to minimise spoilage risk.

Thermo King’s digital solutions enhance the cold chain’s efficiency by offering real-time monitoring of temperature-sensitive shipments. With end-to-end traceability, customers can remotely manage refrigeration units and quickly address any deviations in temperature. Telematics and real-time monitoring provide full transparency across the transportation process, enabling swift responses to any temperature deviations and helping prevent breaks in the cold chain to ensure goods arrive safely and sustainably.

Thermo King Intermodal Europe 2024 Highlights

Visitors to Intermodal Europe 2024 can explore a range of new developments at

the Thermo King stand (Hall 1, Booth B20) including:

  • New Active Controlled Atmosphere System - Designed to preserve the freshness of fruits and vegetables during long-haul transport by actively managing oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) levels within refrigerated containers. With fast oxygen pull-down at 28 liters per minute with nitrogen purity of 95%, the new Thermo King system slows down fresh produce respiration, improving quality and extending its shelf life.

Superior CO2 ventilation, removing excessive CO2 at a rate of 90 liters per minute, ensures the cargo remains in optimal condition throughout its journey, helping growers and exporters reach distant markets while minimising food loss and maintaining product quality.

  • New MP-5000 Controller – A next-generation temperature control solution designed for best-in-class temperature accuracy and remote connectivity and monitoring. On Thermo King CFF reefers, the MP-5000 offers temperature accuracy of up to ±0.25°C, ideal for sensitive cargo. It also features eco-mode efficiency, remote monitoring, and energy tracking, making it an invaluable tool for maintaining cargo quality while reducing costs and environmental impact. The controller supports real-time data logging, which includes temperature, humidity, air exchange, CO2/O2 levels, power consumption, and event logs, ensuring comprehensive monitoring and control for each trip.

  • E-COOLPAC - A power source for reefers when they are not connected to grid- or vessel-power, designed to fit on both an EU flexi chassis and an EU skeleton chassis (either side-mount or centre-mount). Transporters of refrigerated marine containers running port to distribution centre operations or daily reefer container transport, can use E-COOLPAC as an alternative for diesel gensets to reduce their emissions and comply with local regulations.

The E-COOLPAC is available in battery modules, as well as extension packs to deliver power ranging from 35kWh to 105kWh. The batteries can be fitted or retrofitted to marine container chassis, where a genset can currently fit and are compatible with Thermo King marine refrigeration units including CFF and Magnum Plus, as well as other brands of ISO1496-2 reefer units.

Thermo King’s commitment to sustainability is embodies in Trane Technologies’ bold 2030 Sustainability Commitments, including the Gigaton Challenge to reduce customer greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 1 billion metric tons.
